The root of the chicory plant has long been used as a substitute for coffee when roasted, as a result it looks, and to some degree tastes, like coffee, but it is naturally caffeine-free. Chicory root is an incredible source of dietary fibre. In fact, nearly 65% of raw chicory root by weight is fibre. Chicory root is extremely high in inulin, an important prebiotic that is also found in bananas. This makes it an wonderful source of fuel for healthy gut bacteria. Chicory is often used as an ingredient in common food products to add inulin and fibre. Actions: laxative, sedative, anti-inflammatory, antifungal, antibacterial.
