Description

Common mullein is used for the extraction of its essential oil. The flowers and leaves are used to extract essential oil by a steam distillation process. The herb has been used for centuries in America and Europe as an aid for coughs and other lung complaints.

The Mullein plant is found in South & Central America, Europe and temperate zones of Asia. It contains rotenone, coumarin, tannin, triterpene saponins such as mucilage, verbascosaponin, catalpol, aucubin, phenolic acids and flavonoids.

It is used for the treatment of ear infections and ear aches. It is also used to cure fungal infections such as athlete’s foot and ringworm.

Other common names for Mullein are Wooly mullein, Flannel mullein, Candlewick, Clown’s Lungwort, Our Lady’s Flannel, Golden Rod, Aaron’s Rod, Bouillon Jaune, Beggar’s Blanket, Velvet Plant, Torch Weed, Shepherd’s Club, Adam’s Flannel, Candle flower, Blanket Herb, Clot-Bur, Duffle, Bunny’s ears, Jacob’s staff and others.

Mullein essential oil possess anti-inflammatory, analgesic, antiseptic, disinfectant, antiseptic, diuretic, febrifuge, expectorant, tranquilizing and relaxant properties.

Contraindications

Do not use with small children, elders, epileptics, pregnant and/or nursing women.

Thujone (a neurotoxic ketone) shows evidence of a cumulative effect that can result in convulsions, therefore we recommend short-term (less than 7 days) or occasional topical use only in very low dilution (no more than 0.25 percent). Do not use with small children, elders, epileptics, pregnant and/or nursing women. Dilute before using. A patch test should be performed before use for those with sensitive skin.
