Chrysin belongs to a class of chemicals called flavonoids. It occurs naturally in plants such as the passionflower, silver linden, and some geranium species; and in honey and bee propolis (glue). Flavonoids are natural substances found in a variety of plants that may have several significant biological effects. It is widely distributed in plants and has been studied for antioxidant, antispasmodic, anxiolytic, and antiinflammatory activities.
Chrysin is used for bodybuilding; for treating anxiety, inflammation, gout, HIV/AIDS, erectile dysfunction (ED), and baldness; and for preventing cancer.
In a mouse study, chrysin supplementation reduced depressive behavior and brain (hippocampal) dysfunction. In a mouse model of Parkinson’s disease, chrysin also acted as an anti-aging agent and may work to decrease memory impairment.
This herb with its stunningly beautiful flower is native to the Americas where it has been used for centuries to heal bruises and cuts. Modern day herbalists recommend it as a powerful nervine tonic to treat stress, anxiety and to help the mind prepare for a restful nights sleep. It has also been used traditionally to provide relief to women who are experiencing menopause symptoms such as hot flushes. It has a unusually pleasant, very mild taste.
Passionflower can be a wonderful herbal dreamtime ally for those of us who feel a sense of frayed nerves, anxiety, or general agitation around bedtime. Taking this herb around bedtime to help clear the mind and unwind from the day’s events, can set a powerful tone of relaxation for the night ahead. Typically, when the body and mind are more relaxed, our ability to interact with and recall our dreamspace increases. Passionflower also carries a distinct “hypnotic” quality which some people find helps create more vivid dreams.
Also known as Maypop and native to the USA, the Passion Flower has already been used by native americans for medical purposes. Its roots and leaves contain alkaloids that function as MAO inhibitors, which gives the plant its anti-depressant quality and also increases the effects of mind-altering drugs. Scientific studies proved that Passion Flower reduces anxiety naturally, without any side-effects currently known. It is widely used as a soft sedative, anticonvulsant and hypnagogue. Also, it has been said that the plant helps to induce a powerful imagination, which is why it appears on many lists of natural lucid dream triggers.
